July 2017
Exciting news & announcements from
Sierra Association of Foster Families
Sierra Association of Foster Families

18 year old Anthony Lyson, who was adopted from foster care just a few weeks ago, has passed away.
SAFF has been tutoring Anthony for quite some time and his tutor Jonathan said "Anthony was my favorite student."
At the memorial service on Monday July 31, 2017... SAFF was represented by the Executive Director, the tutor, and educational counselor.
Mary Hausauer, who was his counselor at McQueen High School and now an in Independent Contractor with SAFF, gave a testimony at the service stating, "I'm not supposed to say I've had any favorite students, but I did, and it was Anthony."
When Anthony turned 16 year old and received his driving license, he listed himself as an organ donor.
With his death, this teenager donated 7 of his organs, including his heart.
The team at the hospital informed the family that a young child was hours away from death and the only thing that would give him hope for life was a heart transplant.
Anthony's heart was given to the boy.
5 days later reports have been given to the family that the young boy with Anthony's heart is doing well and thriving.
The church facilitating the service was standing room only, including his birth parents, foster and adoptive parents, family members, friends, his foster-adoption social worker from Washoe County Social Services, teachers, and SAFF representatives.

FOSTER-ADOPTIVE FAMILIES ENJOY A FAMILY THEATRE PRODUCTION

On Saturday July 8, SAFF's Executive Director accompanied two of Nevada's most outstanding foster-adoptive families to the Reno Little Theatre's production of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, an award winning Broadway show.
Together, the Simon and the Oliver families have adopted from foster care nearly 40 infants, children, and teens. These families enjoy the arts and know the impact theatre can have as an educational and inspiration way for enriching the lives of youths.
Joseph says, "The Reno Little Theatre invited SAFF to this production. Previously these same families enjoyed shows at Laughing Owl Theatre and Theatre Works... one of the reasons I invite the Oliver and Simon families, besides their love for having their youths enjoy the arts, is that they are dependable. I know they will show up and applaud loudly! what is most enjoyable for me is watching the youths' faces during the production. Sometimes they are the ones with the loudest laughs and giggles! They can be just as entertaining as the actors on stage!"

Vote for N.E.A.T.
Its mission: Using horses as therapy for children, teens and adults. In their eight-and-a-half-year existence, Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy (N.E.A.T.) had to move locations more than once.
And just last fall, the Little Valley Fire forced them to evacuate. "And it felt like the flames were right across the street. They were huge and the sky was lit up, and then I had to pick which of my 3 horses, we have 7 horses plus the two miniatures, which of the three horses I was going to take first," N.E.A.T's co-founder Laurie Roberts told us back in October of 2016, during that fire.
A harrowing time for N.E.A.T., but now things are back to normal. N.E.A.T has its eyes on developing a bigger program, helping more people. Just a couple weeks ago, N.E.A.T was recognized by four premier organizations, NAIOP Northern Nevada, CREW of Northern Nevada, CCIM of Northern Nevada, and the Nevada Builders Association. The group honored N.E.A.T for its work and presented the organization with a check.
N.E.A.T is in talks with the Sanford Center for the Aging at UNR, and is using its award money to develop a pilot program for seniors. And there is more.
N.E.A.T is in the running to win one of the 20 Gypsy Vanner horses offered by the Lexlin Gypsy Ranch. While there are 75 therapy groups in the country in the competition, all N.E.A.T has to do is place in the top 20 to win a horse. The breed is beautiful, small and stout. It's ideal for clients N.E.A.T currently serves and clients of the future. "We have been working with the VA now, for about 6 months, starting a program with them. And obviously the males we work with might be larger in size. So having a larger horse that could carry the weight would be great. And I think this would be great for all of our clients," says Bambi Spahr, the other co-founder of N.E.A.T You can vote every 24 hours for N.E.A.T, vote here, all the way up to June 15.
N.E.A.T. is hoping your vote will give a Gypsy Vanner a good home here in Northern Nevada, where it will be loved, and where countless clients will learn from a steady soul. (excerpted from RENO, Nev. (KOLO)) By Terri Russell)
