Obituary - SAFF's Sorrowful Loss
SAFF's Executive Director Joseph Galata, who is in deep grief, asks all those in foster care to read the obituary below and honor such a great man who is so incredibly responsible for 3 years of enriching the lives of youths in Saff's tutoring program.
Says Joseph " three years ago I sat down with John and shared with him the importance of foster care youths receiving all the help our tutors can offer via our unique tutoring and financial literacy programs. Hours after sharing time with him I said to people " I've just met the most kind hearted, compassionate, generous, gentlest man I've met in my journey around this world!"
For 3 years he has secured major funding for our tutoring programs. For 3 years I've spent memorable time with him. For 3 years he has held my admiration and highest esteem. The last time I spent time with him was recently when he came to see me at SAFF to talk about funding a new component to Saff's tutoring program - high school foster care youth receiving vocational training along with their academic tutoring.
Christmas at SAFF is always very exciting but energy draining for me. This year, the high paced energy affected my diabetic health. I required time to rest after a six month period of intense energy giving ... and just as I began regaining my energy to return to work after 2 weeks away from the office- working up the energy for restarting academic tutoring, hiring and training new tutors, promoting our financial literacy coaching activities and kicking off the promising VIP component....
..... I received the news of John's unexpected death. I'm devastated.
I want to honor John by printing his obituary and letting as many people in foster care honor this incredible, generous, compassionate contributor to foster care youths' educational success."

John Rice Worthington - - Reno, Nevada - 1930-2018

John Worthington gracefully passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018, a mannerbefitting for John, as that was how he did everything in life.
John Worthington was born in St. Paul Minnesota to Leslie and Dorothy Rice Worthington. He attended New Trier high school in Winnetka Illinois. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in 1952 and an MBA and JD in 1955; thereafter, John remained a loyal fan of the Michigan Wolverines and a supporter of the University of Michigan Law School. He served in the US army for two years where he was stationed in France.
John then started his law career in Chicago with Jenner and Block. It was John who introduced Jack Goeken, the founder of a start-up telecommunications company to Bill McGowan who transformed MCI into a telecommunications giant. In 1968, he then joined Bill McGowan at MCI as the General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and member of the Board of Directors, and led the historical anti-trust case against AT&T, which resulted in the United States Justice Department's breakup of its monopoly.
John was passionate about the arts. During John's distinguished career at MCI, he resided in Washington, DC where he served on the Board of Directors for the National Symphony Orchestra and on the Board of The French Heritage Society.
After retiring in 1995, John and his wife Christine settled in Reno, Nevada and increased his philanthropic involvement with non-profits that he believed made the world a better place. He served on the boards of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Nevada Museum of Art, Desert Research Institute, Saint Mary's Hospital Foundation and the University of Nevada Foundation. John was both a strong supporter and advocate for many local organizations that served the underprivileged.
John was a trustee for the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. He served as the Governance Committee Chair where he helped implement best practices and led the family foundation through succession planning and implementation. John believed that education and the arts were vehicles with the power to change the lives of underserved children and youth. He deeply valued the McGowan Fellows program which supports aspiring leaders from some of the country's finest MBA programs. Steeped in ethics and leadership, John believed that this program honored the legacy of Bill McGowan.
John, being a man who enjoyed the finer things in life such as wine and fast cars, was a member of both the Chevaliers du Tastevin and the BMW Club. John was a quiet man, but a great communicator, whose graciousness put people at ease.
John is survived by his wife Christine and his two children: Claudia Hess, Walnut Creek, CA and John Worthington, Hinsdale, IL, and his grandchildren: Elizabeth Worthington, Chicago IL, Andrew Worthington, Denver CO, Kristen Worthington, Chicago IL, Alexander Hess, Brooklyn NY and Madeleine Hess, Los Angeles CA.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Nevada Museum of Art or the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra.Published in Reno Gazette-Journal on Jan. 21, 2018

SAFF's Gratitude for 2017 and Hope for 2018

2017 was a year we at SAFF are grateful for.
Our 19 academic tutors - the majority who are students at UNR - contributed to the educational achievements of foster and adopted children and teens - with sincere dedication. SAFF honors these tutors with our most sincere appreciation, respect, and admiration.
Our financial literacy program helped graduating teens receive scholarships to community college.
One of our tutors who worked with us for nearly 5 years received a 50,000 dollar scholarship from one of our major funders for tutoring!
We received grant funding from organizations in California and Illinois to create and implement our V.I.P. (Vocational Instructional Program).

The business community in our town donated nearly 2,000 toys and 2,000 dollars of movie tickets and gift cards for SAFF to distribute at Christmas.
America Matters Media worked with us to record and broadcast 14 weeks of the radio show "Food Treasures " about healthy eating and preventing junk food binge eating among kids.
Local performing arts theaters hosted foster and adoptive families so they could enjoy live children's theater.
We at SAFF believe validating the contributions by individuals, businesses, organizations, is paramount to being successful. Gratitude is our name of the game!

Many of you know that SAFF's Executive Director never condescends his principles and one of his major principles is " I only work with those who make my work enjoyable because then I can validate everyone I work with."
With that said ... we are SAFF validate the magnificent efforts, talents, skills, and even sacrifices our FOSTER PARENTS and ADOPTIVE PARENTS offer on a daily basis to enrich the lives of the youths we serve! And we validate the tremendous work of the kids' SOCIAL WORKERS. If you've never been a social worker in the child foster care system you have no idea what Social Workers really must do to meet so many government rules and regulations while designing everyday plans to meet the individual and family needs of their clients.
What are our hopes for 2018?
Stay with us and you will discover!!!!!! We got a bundle of hopes!!! And we at SAFF know how to turn hopes into successful actions!
