October 2014 Announcements from SAFF

Picture

Greetings!

Picture
Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle
Thank you Washoe County Social Workers, WIN Workers, foster and adoptive parents for so many requests for the In-Home/After School Academic Tutoring Services. We are overwhelmed with the number of requests.... In fact... SAFF has hired to hire 9 new tutors from the University of Nevada, Reno, and we are still needing at least 4 more.

A tutor must be a student at the University or a Specialist in a specific field of academics. What is really incredible...is the large number of high school youth in foster care ... primarily in the Independent Living Program... who are asking for tutoring in chemistry, advanced algebra, biology, geometry... WOW! Intelligent and determined high school youth!

Our tutors specialize in elementary, middle, and high school studies. Many are attending the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Thank you to the Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation, WCSS Independent Living Program, Community Foundation, and all of the other organizations and businesses which donate funding to make this program so successful.

NEVADA EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY HORSE RANCH

Picture
Always remember.... If you would like to see an incredible program in action... you can contact NEAT... Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy.... The youth who have and are participating in the program working with horses to help the youth deal with different traumas and problems are demonstrating magnificent progress.

Laurie Roberts and Bambi Spears are the Assisted Equine Therapists... the ranch is located on Valley Road .. up the street from the Reno Livestock Center in Reno. In July, NEAT and SAFF (who is honored to promote NEAT) hosted a BBQ for 45 dignitaries and we watched youth demonstrated their riding techniques. Stupendous!

DO YOU KNOW A YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES
WHO WANTS TO STUDY DANCE?

Picture
Kia Crater's Fasincating Rhythm School of the Performing Arts has a dance class for youth with disabilities. SAFF is so proud of the foster youth and adoptive youth participate. Kids with both physical and mental disabilities are having a blast of fun!

One young dancer... Juan and his adoptive mom attend regularly.. and recently Juan was in his first dance show! We at SAFF are so proud of him!

THANK YOU FOR THE FUNDRAISER!

The Family Yogurt Shop on the campus of UNR and the Alpha Kappa Psi Co-ed Sorority and Fraternity sponsored a 1 day fundraiser for SAFF's tutoring program.

Here is a photo of Kelly Erwin, a SAFF tutor, who organized the event. Thank you everyone! We sure do appreciated the support we get from UNR!
