October News:

Well, the holiday season is approaching and SAFF is participating in many events sponsored by wonderful partners and community organizations. There were just too many to list all in one blast so we sent out this second notice. 


CHRISTMAS STORYTELLING FESTIVAL! FREE!

A cast of teens (including foster teens) and adults will be performing an original 1 hour Christmas Storytelling Festival with music and dance! The story takes place in the home of Charles Dickens in Victorian London while he is writing the famous story A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

A group of chimney sweepers (Mary Poppins style) share Christmas stories and perform dances and songs.

Featuring acclaimed trumpeter Michael La Torre, teens from 6 local schools, an acclaimed Los Angeles actress, a local singer, and featuring SAFF's Executive Director, an international award winning storyteller!

FREE PERFORMANCES are Dec 4, 5, & 6 at Good Luck Macbeth Theatre, Dec 11 at Unity Center Reno, Dec 12 (matinee) at Center for Spiritual Living and Dec 12 evening (invited audience) a Tru Talent Theatrical Agency.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE CELEBRATION! FREE!
  
After performing the original storytelling production with music and dance in London, New York  City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Minneapolis & Las Vegas, Joseph Galata - SAFF's Executive Director will perform "MY GRANDMOTHER'S DANCE" at the Unity Center Reno, Sunday Dec 6 at 11 am.

Audiences who have seen this performance have been returning to see it again and bringing photographs of their grandmothers! It's all about the beauty of grandmas!

Once again, the National Charity League is producing SAFF's annual holiday Christmas party. 

This year's day of fun will be Dec 13! Limited to 200 children! It's always a blast!!!! First registration is at the pumpkin decorating party on Oct. 11. See the Pumpkin article for more information.

FREE PERFORMANCES AT UNR NIGHTINGALE HALE
In Our Own Backyard

Nightingale Music Hall on the UNR campus Sept. 29 and 30th and October 2nd! All performances at 7:00pm! Tickets are "by donation only" at the door! Pay what you can!

These 12 teens received such high acclaim for their production, that we were invited to perform at UNR at no expense to SAFF!!!! College students majoring in diverse disciplines are being required to attend for their course credits. IT'S FREE but love donations will be accepted at the end of the show.

STREETSMART 4 YOUTH

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada proudly announces Steetsmart 4 Youth to benefit youth who are homeless or at-risk in our community. We invite you to join us for a dynamic fundraising campaign that features participating restaurants and invites diners to make a difference by giving locally to help locally.

100% of your donation will go to The Children's Cabinet, The Eddy House, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, The Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality, and the Sierra Association of Foster Families.


200 Pumpkins!!!  FREE!!!

The National Women's Charity League is donating 200 pumpkins to SAFF for Halloween!

Come decorate the pumpkins!!!

Come get your free pumpkins for Halloween! At the same time we will be taking reservations for those families who will be receiving Christmas gifts from SAFF.

  • SAFF has received generous grant funding from the McGowan Foundation, Nevada Women's Fund, Nevada Energy Foundation, & Washoe County Social Services in collaboration with the Walter S. Johnson Fund. The grant funding will be used for enhancing the education and welfare of high school students in the Washoe County foster care system.
     
  • SAFF's In-Home After School Academic Tutoring is now beginning again for the current school year. At this time we are focusing our work on high school students selected by Washoe County Social Services.

  • SAFF's program THINK RICHLY: LEARN TO EARN is focusing on educating high school teens in foster care about financial issues such as preventing identity theft, avoiding payday loan shops, establishing credit when the exit the foster care system and managing credit, college and vocational school scholarships, private vs government student loans, etc. etc. 12 high school teens and 4 professional adults are participating in the unique original web-video production and students from University of Nevada are enthusiastic about serving as educators and mentors.

ANNOUNCEMENT

SAFF's Executive Director has been awarded 2 national certifications as a Financial Literacy Educator and Financial Literacy Coach. Joseph has been appointed to serve on Nevada Board of Directors Opportunity Alliance as well as 5 committees to design educational, coaching, and policy projects for our state's residents in reducing poverty and increasing financial stability and wealth.
