August 2014 Announcements from SAFF

Greetings!

Picture
With the generosity of the Unity Center on Kings Row in Reno, and thegenerosity of Washoe County School Board Trustee Dr. Howard Rosenberg, SAFF had the pleasure of distributing 235 backpacks plus notebooks, pens, pencils, to the youth in foster, adoptive, and birth homes on Saturday morning August 9.

Members of the Unity Center expressed to Joseph about how impressed they were with the politeness and manners of the children and teens. "The kids were so well-behaved and the parents so grateful," said one member of Unity who  helped distribute. Parents even received a wonderful gift!

We are currently distributing the remaining backpacks and school supplies to youth in the rural areas. Rural WIN workers are wonderful! We, at SAFF, really enjoy the positive energies of the  WIN Workers in the rural areas.

Tutoring!

Picture
So many of the youth in Washoe County schools and foster/adoptive homes are grateful for the services rendered by SAFF's tutors during the previous school year.  If you read a recent edition of the Reno Gazette Journal you might have seen a list of names of medical students who arenow full time medical students - 13 of them served as SAFF's tutors during  the year. But now they are moving on with full time medical studies, over-seas internships in health clinics, and Ph.D programs.

So we are now hiring new tutors from the University of Nevada-Reno; of course, we are fortunate to have many of our current tutors continuing their valuable services.

Besides being quite intelligent, they are very multi-cultural. Our tutors represent Latino, Middle Eastern, Korean, Danish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Maylasian, Native American, African American, Middle Eastern, and Caucasian.  Quite multi-talented, too, we have concert pianist, violinist, literary editors, published writers, singers, dancers.
We have a waiting list of children and teens ready for tutors.. now that school has started here in Washoe County we'll resume full time tutoring, tutoring only continued throughout the last month and half for specific students in specific situations. So all of the tutors are really anxious to get into the homes and begin helping our foster/adoptive youth enjoy the journey to academic success.
