EXCITING NEWS! REALLY EXCITING NEWS!

Picture
Following the successes taking place in San Francisco, London, and other cities throughout the United States and Europe, the wonderful Community Foundation of Western Nevada right here in Reno has formed a coalition of 5 local non profits and SAFF is one of them for a special event from October 1 through November 18.
The coalition's goal is to get at least 100 local restaurants to sign on as
participants with an exciting fundraising project.
For six weeks, the patrons in each restaurant after they finished eating breakfast, lunch or dinner will be asked to add 1 dollar to their bill.

The 1 dollar will be donated to the Community Foundation which, in turn, will distribute to the 5 local non-profits - including SAFF!!!!
The $ raised will be used by each of the non-profits for projects improving the lives of our economically disadvantaged youths in Reno/Sparks, to help them to break the cycles of poverty, homelessness, government assistance welfare, and give them as many necessary tools, means and ways to go from poverty into middle class. Our foster teens in Washoe County will benefit from this incredibly exciting fundraiser.

Be on the watch for major media coverage!
If you have a favorite restaurant that you think would love to participate.. contact SAFF's Executive Director, Joseph at [email protected].

We thank the Community Foundation of Western Nevada for once again reaching out into the community to help improve the lives of everyone who lives here, and for us at SAFF - especially the teens in foster care.

A fundraiser event

High Sierra AHEC is one of SAFF's favorite community partners. Each Christmas they collect and donate to SAFF beautiful winter coats, gloves, socks, scarves for SAFF to distribute as Christmas presents to the birth parents whose children are in foster care. Everyone at Christmas deserves a gift and each year we see these birth parents grateful for the warm clothing.

FINANCIAL LITERACY COACHING EDUCATION AND MENTORING PROGRAM is in major development

SAFF is so excited about the continuing development of it's new program FINANCIAL LITERACY COACHING EDUCATION AND MENTORING PROGRAM.

Community organizations are helping to design, advise, implement, and fund this exciting new project which will be for teens.  Tutors will help teens - with a national video SAFF is producing - to learn about developing Action Plans for managing money so money doesn't manage them.

Nevada ranks #1 in the nation for the most number of families living in poverty.

Teens being tutored by SAFF will develop action plans with their tutors on subjects important for when the teens age out of the foster care system and/or return to their birth families. Subjects include Avoiding Predatory Loans, Managing Credit Cards, Completing a College or Vocational School Application, Writing Scholarship Essays, The Difference Between Private and Government Student Loans, Do's and Don'ts in Renting and Keeping an Apartment, and other important subjects. It's not enough to simply be taught things about Financial Literacy. What is important is to develop an Action Plan.

Community organizations helping SAFF are Opportunity Alliance Financial Literacy Coaching of Nevada, National Financial Literacy Educators Council, National Financial Institute, William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, Charles Schwab, American Wealth Management, Center for Spiritual Living, Spotlight Youth Theatre, UNR Dean Scholar Program, The Stream Media Team, and others. SAFF is currently seeking funding from diverse local and national foundations.

Filming of the national Financial Literacy web video is on July 27 with adult, college students, and high school teens participating as on-camera educators, spokespersons, and actors.
