Announcements from SAFF

NEW GRANT AND NEW PROJECT!

Picture
SAFF is honored and excited to announce it has received a special grant from a Chicago foundation for SAFF to create a new component to our Academic Tutoring Program.  The new project is FINANCIAL LITERACY COACHING AND TUTORING. SAFF will be partnering with financial institutions and businesses in Reno along with various departments at UNR.

The project will consist of 2 parts....  short videos posted on a special web site for high school youth in foster care preparing to exit the system... along with one-to-one mentoring/tutoring by UNR students as the foster youth prepare to exit and for 6-12 months after foster care.

Picture
Subjects will include: Preventing identity theft after a youth exits foster care, credit card  management and interest rates, private versus government student loans, FAFSA forms for financial aid, how to write a college or trade school application and scholarship essay, avoiding predatory check cashing shops, how to get a birth certificate, passport and any additional necessary identification,  choosing the right care insurance contract, preventing and/or managing debt, and other important subjects.
The assigned mentors/tutors will continue working with the high school youth for a period of 6-12 months after they exit the foster care system.

SAFF's Executive Director Joseph Galata has been invited by Charles Schwab Financial Institution to attend a 40 hour certificate program on Financial Literacy Coaching just for this exciting new SAFF project!

ACADEMIC TUTORING

Picture
We are receiving a multitude of referrals from the excellent social workers at Washoe County Social Services for foster care youths needing special assistance with their school progress. The school term is about to end and we know that there are youths with special needs who require tutoring during the 2 month summer break. SAFF has found it necessary to hire 3 more UNR students for tutoring so our roster of tutors continues to grow!

Picture
Also, we are awaiting final statistics, but we are confident from all reports that MANY MANY of Washoe County's high school youth in foster care are GOING TO BE GRADUATING IN JUNE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this isn't exciting, we don't know what is!!!  Kuddos to the students, their social workers, their foster parents and to any SAFF tutors helping!!!
